It was an evening that bridged the gap between hip-hop’s past and present. From Alicia Keys and Wu-Tang Clan to Rick Ross and Kanye West to LL Cool J and Public Enemy, Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam concert, at Giant’s Stadium, was a night that saw the new school artists get schooled by the old school artists. Artist after Artist came on stage but it was LL Cool J who started the crowd up, The G.O.A.T turned it out with headsprung. The much talked about Lil Wayne turned in one of the nights worst performance’s. The crowd barely moved or swayed as he went thru his usual list of trash tracks, I think I saw a couple of 13 year olds dancing to lollipop in the corner of the stadium, but for the most part he was a big flop. Public Enemy came out and tore the stage up with fight the power. Chuck D can still hold it down with the best of them, Public Enemy had the best performace of the night, it is no wonder they are the greatest rap group of all time. Kanye west was the main event and he bombed just like Lil Wayne, he did a freestyle at the end of his set trying to get some kind of applause out of the crowd, but the back pack rapper doesnt move real hip hop heads. Overall Hiphopspy would have to say it was worth it to see the old school acts, but most of the current day acts have no stage presence and are not worth seeing under any setting.

 A bit of humility goes a long way, but, unfortunately, it’s an attribute Kanye West doesn’t seem to have much of.Trumpeting himself as the best artist ever, hahahahaha  excuse me , i was coughing.West’s performance at last week’s Good Vibrations festival was by no means the best of the day. Audience reaction indicated that Calvin Harris, The Rapture and Cypress Hill far out-performed West, even with all the bells and whistles of his stage show, which were lost on the outdoor event.And that’s not to mention West refusing to do media interviews and banning photographers from taking pictures of his set. We at hiphopspy have said all along that kanye is a beatmaker turned rapper. That said he needs to concentrate on beats and leave performing to the real rappers I dont care what the people in the suburbs tell him.

That lil’ stunt Kanye pulled was hot- the sonning the Grammy “wrap it up” music. But will the rapper get fined for overextending the time limit? Kanye got the Grammy, but the Grammy people get paid off those pricey ads that run. Well, they say when Kanye went overtime some 34 seconds, he cut into somebody’s time and now he must be fined. He hasn’t been fined yet, but they are saying that dude is going to get hit with a $100k fine. Apparently, the board of the Grammys is going to meet and make a decision. This has never happened in the past, but Kanye was pretty brazen to the “wrap it up.” Well, you can’t tell him nothing, right?
